See Eric Ronnberg's excellent monograph titled "Paint and Colors for American Merchant Vessels, 1800-1920:Their Study and Interpretation for Modelmaking" at the Nautical Research Guild's website

http://www.thenrg.org/displayshopnote.html?id=7

Ignore the part in the title about merchant vessels.   The color theory and pigment choices are applicable to not only merchant vessels, but to naval vessels, railroads, and buildings.   Much of Ronnberg's information came from period buildings and railroads.

Bang for the buck paint coverage efficiencey is as important to merchant ship captains, as to naval constructors, as to railroad magnates.

period ship colors - circa 1799
Posted by Zellars on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 9:20 PM

Now that I am done with my Zellars model I am turning my attention toward a model kit I baught a few years back; USS Enterprise - 1799 by Constructo. This is an early kit and not the newest that Constructo offers.

With that in mind I have been looking for sources or info on ship colors or painting scheme for that period of ship. The kit doesn't offer any color/painting scheme. So, I was wondering if anyone here has any ideas or suggestions on resources or web links I could follow up on?

Thanks
