CV-33 USS Kearsarge Help?

Sounds like he served when she was doing Anti-Submarine warfare.  Any of the Revell carriers, Hornet, Wasp, Lexington, Oriskany, would work.  Cruise the auction sites since these kits are out of produciton.

Dragon claims to be releasing a modernized essex class this year in 1/700 scale, but they have been saying this for three years now so don't hold your breath.

You can get decals through Starfighter Decals for your Revell model.  I forgot at the moment who makes a wide array of planes and helicopters for these kits, but they are out there and available.

I also served aboard the USS Kearsarge, in 1952 and 1953. I checked my cruise book but couldn't locate a McMartin in the Marines section. If I have the name wrong, let me know your dad"s name and I'd be glad ti send you the USMC photos from the book.

I can appreciate what you're trying to do with the model. I had the same idea a few years ago and picked up a Lindberg 1/525 scale model of the Yorktown while at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Charleston, SC. It's the same class (Essex) as the Kearsarge so it should be easy to modify..

The Kearsarge was a "Longhulled Essex" class. All of the above are short hulls. The only difference is in the shape of the bow and might not make a diiference if extreme accuracy is not a problem.

My dad was also on the Kearsarge, but in the late 1940's. I also am planning to make a model based on the Trumpeter Lexington.I don't think this would work for you guys, as there were two major reconstructions if I recall correctly-the angled deck was put in in the early 50's and the ASW conversion in the late 50's.

Well Dan I guess you might find my Dad then, Elmer Moorehead. He was an AO on the Kearsarge during your time on board. I’m having a professional museum quality model for my day of the Kearsarge CV-33 built. He was very proud to be on her deck and misses all those that served with him. As Dad says, it was a different Navy back then.

Kearsarge in the late 50s and early 60s was an angled deck carrier,,,,,she also was an attack carrier until October 1958, when she became a CVS

since the Revell 1/525 kits are a combination of features anyway, it might be possible to build Kearsarge's SCB-27A +SBC-125 configuration from one of those,,,,,just be careful not to follow "27-Charlie" build notes that you might find online for some of her sisters

not much help, but without a closer date, it's hard for anyone to give her actual configuration, or the CVG,  ATG, or CVSG she would have had embarked
