Depth Charge Colour ?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 9:20 PM
May seem like a strange question but Iwas wondering what the colour of depth charges were? Specifically on the Fletcher during WWII. Were they just the same colour of the ship or where they a black or white colour ?

Most of the instances I've seen, they were painted a standard Neutral Gray color. The Navy had an interior gray color (not Haze Gray) that they used, probably the Standard Pre-War Navy Gray. I've also seen them in a darker shade, almost a gunmetal color.

They wouldn't be painted in the conventional sense (Navy Blue, Haze Gray, etc) to match the ship's camo, since they never in the racks very long.

Maybe a bit off topic, but RCN depth charges were a light to medium grey. Some had banding to indicate the filler, my one reference photo that mentions this shows a green diamond pattern and red band around the center of the charge to indicate Amatol.
