Ferreira book?
Posted by Shipwreck on Monday, November 26, 2007 2:24 PM
A couple of months ago someone mentioned a book that had a chapter about the Ferreira/Cutty Sark. Does anyone remember the title of the book?

There are several books with info on Cutty Sark as Ferreira. Between the three references summarized below, twelve diferent photos of Ferreira can be found plus a verbal description from on board. Basil Lubbock's book "The China Clippers" (of which I don't have a copy) is supposed to have information on her. Her appearance did not change significantly until 1916, when she was dismasted and rerigged as a barquentine and painted grey with a band of painted 'gunports'.

1.) There is a small booklet with limited text written by Frank Carr that used to be issued with the Revell model titled "The Cutty Sark and the Days of Sail". The booklet contains:

a.) a starboard bow view of Ferreira from 1913 with her original rig under plain sail and black hull.

b.) a similar view from 1916 in her dismasted state.

c.) a bow drydock view from 1921 after her re-rigging as a barquentine and grey paint with a row of painted ports.

d.) a port broadside view of her from 1922 as a grey barquentine.

2.) A book "Running Her Easting Down" by William F. Baker contains:

a.) an eleven page chapter "Relegated to Obscurity" which includes a description from a merchant captain who found her in New Orleans in 1913 and toured her.

b.) a port bow shot from before 1916 in original paint and rig, apparently at anchor, with no sails.

c.) an up close port bow shot from 1922 at Surrey docks showing some detail

d.) a starboard broadside view from 1915 in original paint and rig under sail,

e.) a good starboard bow shot rom 1922 at Surrey docks showing barquentine rigging detail.

f.) a starboard aft stern view showing hull paint from 1922, little rigging detail.

3.) book "The Log of the Cutty Sark" by Basil Lubbock contains:

a.) 19 page chapter titled "Under the Portugese"

b.) photos 1-c and 2-e from the books above.

c.) two closeup photos of bow from port and starboard, showing figurehead and bowsprit details in 1922/23,

d.) a starboard aft view from 1923 showing more barquentine rigging details and gunport paint job.

Big Jake,

Gearing up is kind of an understatement. I bought a 1:96 Cutty Sark at K-mart for $18.00, in 1976. Started painting it, but mostly moved it around the country for 20 years. Several years ago my wife bought me a 1:96 Constitution as a gift, and encouraged me to build it (she didn't know what she was in for).

It seemed most logical to start with the Cutty Sark, so I started research and putting together a workshop area about two years ago. During my Cutty Sark research, I learned of the Ferreira. I am trying to pin down a 1916 version, but the pictures will change dates depending on the source. The reason for the post is to make sure I have covered all of the bases that I can. I missed the 11 pages that are in the Baker book! Thanks to Alan for pointing that out!

It has been over 40 years since I built a ship, so I decided to start with my old Cutty sark to revamp my modeling skills. But the the Ferreira turns out to be the better refresher build being it is to be a dilapidated version anyway. My problem is that I am running out of time. As I approach 60 in a couple of years, I may not be able to complete all of these builds.

Two weeks ago I finally started production. The badly warped hull is now together, but not finished. It was a week of repetitions of glue, clamp, dry, and modify. I am currently working on changing Revell's interpretation of the rudder and kneel attaching point. My version may be based on Campbell; the Revell kit seems to be based on Longridge. It may be different for the Ferreira due to changes subsequent to the original construction.

Did you ever complete your build of the Ferreira?

No not yet.  I promised to finish the big Chebec kit before starting another.  I'm just about finished the Flying Fish and will so start to tear down my 1960 GMC pick up to start the OEM restoration to get her ready for the summer of 2008, so that's why I have not been on the board too much lately.
