Question about GMM Liberty Ship PE

That's nothing new to me... I've been using PE sets on aircraft for many years.  Check out the straps on those 1/144 rudder pedals back under the instrument panel...

peterj, you've discovered one of the wonders of photoetch - it may be invisible once the model is done, but YOU know it's there!

Thanks Ed and Chris for your help!  It looks like the gratings will be all but invisible once installed, but it's still nice to know they're correct.  Varnishing instead of painting will help them stand out a bit more also.

These particular gratings may have been varnished, not painted.  Ed’s statement about painting is true for the steering platform located on the flying bridge level.

Most bridge gratings are wooden slats/square weaves which are designed to get the topside personnel's feet up and off the wet & cold deck.   Place the gratings on the bridge wing decking.

On capital ships they may be teak.  On a Liberty they would most likely be a secondary wood -- and painted to match the surrounding decks.  Drybrush yours just a bit to bring out the structure.

Thanks, Ed.  I wasn't confused about the Open Bridge, but just whether the gratings went above or below the bridge wings.  You've unconfused me!  The hilight on the open bridge is just to remind me to do it.  (As is "Duh!")  It helps me figure out what to subassemble before PE-ing, and what to PE first.

Now that I know where they go, should the gratings replace the solid floor of the wings, or sit on top of the floor?

Look in the upper right corner of the fret, just below the product name.   It is labeled Open Bridge Details.  That goes on the top of the bridgehouse, the square you have highlighted yellow, just forward of the stack.

The bridge wings stick out on either side of the bridgehouse, allowing full side to side access & visibility.   The parts on the lower left of the fret go on the kit parts you noted (B11/B12).    If you look closely at the arrow on Loren's plans it is bent sharply, pointing down.   He means the deck flooring,
