Modern US Navy Warship Colour(s) Question...which gray?
Posted by jhawk on Thursday, December 27, 2007 9:37 AM

Good Morning:  I'm building Dragon's USS Momsen, DDG-92.  The instructions call for the deck colour to be IJN Gray.  The LHS does not have this colour.  What colour would be close?  I don't have to have an exact colour match, but something close would be nice.  Also, which "red" should I use for the hull colour?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Gunship gray will work, tone it down with a little white for a weathered effect.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

I like American Tradition's Red Primer from Lowes hardware store in the large economy-sized rattlecan.

In hobby enamels, check White Ensign Model's Colourcoat line of paints for a modern USN hull red.

In acrylics, check the railroad-side of the hobby shop for Polly Scale Mineral Red.  Look too at the ModelMaster Acryl II Marine line of paints for a USN hull red.  The line is OOP, but you can most likely order it direct from Testors.

Thanks for all the tips.  After I posted, I thought to do a "search" on this forum for the "Arleigh Burke" and see what colours pple were using for that ship.  I should have done that search first, but didn't think of it until after I posted.  Thanks for your tips and suggestions.
