WWII japanese submarine with planes???
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 22, 2003 10:31 PM
Hi all,
I usaually build model planes. but I was watching the history channel the other day and saw a segment about a japanese submarine that had a small hanger for planes onboard. One even bombed the US mainland. I think it was the I-25 or I-26.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a model kit of one these aircarft-carrier/submarines. I think it would be a great diorama.
TIA,
chrisj

You may be able to find these in your local hobby shop.
It seems like the I19 kit was a nice one.

Don't forget the I-400 class that carried 3 aircraft each.

The I-400 class (3 boats completed) are the ones that carried aircraft to the US.
These were, by far, the largest subs built in WW II.

Aircraft carrier submarines. Check "Sea Classics" magazine for March 2004. It has an article by the U.S. Navy officer that sailed as Executive Officer on the prize crew that brought the I-400 (three plane carrier) from Japan to Pearl Harbor at the end of WWII. The 400-class were on their way to attach the Panama Canal when the war ended and never fired a shot. They were real mammoths.

Hey, I am digging into this subject and looking for a model of the Japanese submarine B-1 I-25, featured at this link: http://www.portorfordlifeboatstation.org/article1.html

The submarine did a bombing run south of my home town and I am looking into modeling it for the Port Orford Lifeboat Station Museum along with other modelling projects in the works.

Anyone know of models of this particular sub design that are not out of stock? (The original links in this thread show as out of stock)

Thanks much!

I remember watching a show on National Geographic a couple of years ago, and it seems that the english too had been playing with the idea of building a hangar on a sub. I don't remember the number nor the class, but they did built one of those, however, during testruns near the harbour, the hangar was hit by during a colision with a civil ship and the sub sunk immediately.

that was on the history or discovery channel this past year except it had a 12+ inch gun turret that got hit by a merchant ship. the collision ripped the turret almost off the sub & caused flooding in the sub & killing the crew. the sub was only found in the 1990's.

If i read this correctly, the Nichimo I-19 would be the same class as the I-25 all it would require is a decal change.

Probably have to google around,... maybe e-mail or call for verification of stock.
Pacific Front might be your best bet.

I have Nichimo's 1/200 Type IX U-boat, and the overall quality is quite good, so their I-19 is likely good as well. And alternative to the Nichimokit is the Monogram I-19. I built this kit back in the 1970's. Although most Monogram kits from that era are junk, this one is actually pretty decent.

I think it basically a box scales out to about 1/300, so it is smaller than Nichimo's, but at 14", it is still decent sized. Although out of production, I found an internet retailer who seemed to indicate that they may still carry it.

ddp59,
The Royal Navy used the M-Class subs to experiment with 12in guns and as aircraft carriers. They were a development of the K, shudder, Class steam subs
with conventional power.
Some said that as a devpment of the Ks they could never be any good!

I built one of these years ago, don't recall which one but it had a hanger and a small plane. I believe it was from Monogram but I could be wrong, it was a very long time ago.
