Q re Helo ops from Famous class USCG Cutters
Posted by peterj on Friday, February 29, 2008 9:02 AM

I'm going to be starting my 1/700 JAG USCGC Bear soon, building her as the Campbell WMEC-909 stationed at Portsmouth NH.  Being an AF vet, I'm totally clueless about USCG aviation ops.

The Bear class has a retractable hangar.  When it is extended, and when is it retracted?  I'm planning on putting a helo on deck, and want the hangar to be in the appropriate configuration.  I haven't decided if I'm going to display the helo blades/tail folded or in flight position, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

The Coast Guard website, www.uscg.mil, has lots of photos of 270-foot cutters.  From the home page, click on "Multimedia," then on "Photos," then type "Bear" into the search box.  My first try brought up more than 300 photos.  (Some of them didn't actually include the Bear - but lots did.)  If none of those pictures shows what you need, try searching on the names of the other ships in the class:  Campbell, Escanaba, Forward, Harriet Lane, Legare, Mohawk, Northland, Seneca, Spencer, Tahoma, Tampa, and Thetis.

That should at least provide a start.  Good luck.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Thanks for the link, Professor.  I've just discovered that there are two Bears in Portsmouth, the Campbell and the Tahoma.  Fortunately, the JAG kit includes names and hull numbers for the whole class.
