Back in the loop
Posted by Grem56 on Sunday, March 9, 2008 10:52 AM

After a long absence here due to rebuilding and painting the house I am back in the shipbuilding loop with a new workspace. First build is the Revell Viking ship (John Tilley's thread got me interested in it).

First oil wash applied to the hull and the deck here.

Right next to my garage/workshop where my compressor and spray workbench live.

After this I hope to get back to my USS Constitution which has been in storage for the last months with one side weathered and the other side still squeaky clean.

Cheers,

Julian

Grem,

Your work bench is far too organized, neat and clean. It almost makes me jealous. But if my space was so organized, I'd never be able to find anything!

Actually, it is good to see your post again!

Thanks Jayman 1, yes the workspace is so clean it scares me Wink [;)]

The clean thing won't last though and you will see it slowly decline into an unorganised and rather grungey state that will make me feel more at home and drive mrs. Grem56 mad Big Smile [:D]

Cheers,

Julian

The model looks great!  That oil paint gives the browns a warm cast that just can't be gotten any other way.  I'm anxious to see the finished product.

Tomorrow's payday.  I shall sally forth on a quest to find one of those Revell Viking ships at a hobby shop somewhere in eastern North Carolina - before it (the kit, that is) disappears for another twenty years.

Thanks for the compliment John. Oil does do things for immitation wood that acrylics and enamels can't. Drying time is the only con.

The Revell viking ship is listed again the 2008 catalogue so I would hazard a guess that it will remain available for a while yet. If you do buy it check out the anchor included with the kit: the cross bar would seem way too long IMHO and I have trimmed it down a bit to what would seem better proportions.

Cheers,

Julian

I certainly hope you're right, Grem56.  I all know is that it isn't in the online catalog of either Revell-Monogram (U.S.) or Revell Europe, and Squadron Mail Order has had it marked "out of stock" for several weeks.

The Revell-Monogram catalog now contains an impressive total of eight ship kits.  The only relatively new one is the big Gato-class submarine; all the others are reissues of kits from the fities, sixties, and seventies.

The "new releases" section of the Revell Europe website contains a Hanseatic cog.  That almost has to be a reboxing of the Zvezda kit from a couple of years ago.

The German branch of the company gives the impression of being, in general, considerably more progressive, and more interested in serious modelers, than the American one.  On the other hand, Revell Europe has the unmitigated gall to promote the 1/535 U.S.S. Missouri as a "new" kit.  (It was originally released in 1954 - the first ship kit Revell ever made.  By modern standards it's a piece of junk; so far as I can tell, it hasn't been improved a bit since its first appearance.)  On the other hand, there's a 1/144 Fletcher-class destroyer in the pipeline - and the new 1/350 Bismarck apparently is a masterpiece.  So maybe there's room for hope.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

There's one left at the above link, i just purchased the other remaining kit for a tad under $30.00 shipped.

Ever since I moved to Greenville, NC, twenty-five years ago, the one hobby shop in town has been a hobby/craft/art supply store, part of a chain called Hungate's.  I've always told myself that Hungate's is a better store for the modeler than it really has to be; although hobbies are only one of the firm's product lines, its selections of kits, tools, paints, etc. has always been reasonably good.  And I saw a Revell Viking ship there, shortly before Christmas.

So today (payday) I betook myself to the mall, hoping Hungate's would still have the Viking ship.  Surprise, surprise:  Hungate's was gone, replaced by a store that sells women't handbags.

My wife and I are going to Raleigh over the weekend; maybe I can track down a Viking ship there.  If not, I'll try Amazon or Internet Hobbies (which did list the kit as of a few minutes ago).

So now Greenville has a big university, a major hospital, a whole bunch of chain restaurants (down to and including Hooter's), a Sears, a Kohl's, a Belk's, and two (count 'em two) Lowe's stores - but no hobby shop.  Well, I guess things could be worse.  Maybe Hungate's will come back in some other shopping center.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.
