Getting started
Posted by Dirkpitt289 on Sunday, March 23, 2008 10:13 PM

Alright guys, I found and ordered the model I want to start with. What would you guys suggest I need to get started? What are the types of paints I should get for building ships (Ocean Liners). Fillers/ puddy? Tools?

Also any ideas for a place to get scale fishing nets or something that would pass as fishing nets?

Thanks guys

Help us out a little: what scale are you talking about for your nets...

As to the paints, what are you comfortable working with? Each type has advantages and disadvantages. Most modelers have a preference that is based on different things, ease of use, odor, chemical sensitivity, drying time, etc. etc.

As to putty, there are different types for different purposes.

Tools, sprue cutter, Xacto knife with a variety of blades, smooth jawed pliers for PE, several sizes of tweezers, glue applicators.

The ship I got is 1/600 scale. I'm a ship wreck hound and my vision of this ship is going to be how it exists today on the bottom of the ocean off Queenstown. One of the most common occurrences yo most ship wrecks is they ensnare a large amount of fishing nets .

For fish netting go to your local fabric store and look for bridle vailing, crynoline etc. One yard of the stuff will give you miles of netting. Look around and you will find lots of interesting thread, scissors, pins, and all kinds of useful stuff.  modelbob@hotmail.com
