PE; Where does it end?
Posted by searat12 on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 1:21 AM

I am in the early stages of assembling one of the new Aoshima 1/350 'Atago's', and have also picked up a main gun turret upgrade from Voyager.  Having spent several hours and a lot of patience, I have finally assembled two of the five turrets, fiddling with REALLY tiny bits of PE brass for rails, ladders, etc, dropping increasingly tiny bits, getting them stuck upside down with super-glue, cleaning them off and re-gluing, and then it suddenly came to me..... How I pity the poor bastards who are trying to do this at 1/700!!!  I have sworn I would never get one of the entire PE upgrades for any ship model, on manual, as well as moral grounds, and this latest exercise confirms my opinion.  Am I the only one out there that thinks that there must be SOME limits to the 'gods of accuracy?'

All that said, I AM thinking 'maybe just a couple more rails here and there wouldn't be TOO bad,' but of course, that way lies madness!

What are you complaining about? 1/350 is hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! *grins*

I am one of those poor SOBs, and yes, there are times when I think, Maybe I should trade up to that bigger scale. Then I look around at my extreme lack of space and decide to stick with 1/700 for awhile longer. That said ... remember, above all things, it is your model. So what if "they" wonder why you didn't include the 500 invididual holding brackets for the degaussing cable? "They" didn't buy it or build it, so to heck with 'em! Just because it's on a PE fret doesn't mean it absolutely has to go on your model.

This is a hobby, supposedly to give us pleasure. Anyone who thinks you can't get absolutlely great results building out of the box, with the fantastic level of detail on most kits today, need only thumb through an issue of the Model Art magazine from Japan, or any similar publication.

searat, maybe a yoga course would help you with the small stuff. Clear your mind first, breathe deeply several breaths, and start with the big stuff first. Or don't put the PE on at all and imagine it there,Or just go to 3D computer moddeling,However that does require a six month learning period and several thousand $ woth of hard and software. Hmm I guess the philosphy is if it were easy it wouldn't be worth doing.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

The smallest I have worked is a 1/600 Airfix Mauretania, and after that was over I decided not to get into 1/700. But even at 1/350 we can get silly. How DO you model the chip on the rim of the Capatain's coffee mug?

mfsob is right. If it starts to become frustrating, I back off on the details. How many people viewing the model even notice those fidly bits anyway?

I am one of those sickos who love PE at 1/700... when I finally  assembled my Yamato crane after considerable pre-fiddling, I was thrilled beyond belief, and hooked forever.

Well, best of luck to you PE-heads, I'M going to keep to a minimum and just enjoy the rest of the build, as has been suggested above.  I think the only reason I stumbled down this PE road in the first place was the necessity of replacing those darn turrets! I have done some very small work before, small painting too, but Sheeesh!!!  Anyways, enough whining from me and back to the work table.....

PE heads indeed ...

Speaking of which, when is someone going to make a brush small enough to paint the faces on our ever so fun to paint 1/700 crewmen? Banged Head [banghead]

There's that English guy who paints with hairs from a FLY, and does sculptures inside the eyes of needles. Jeesh!

To him, 1/700 would be 1/48 to us...

I found myself gravitating towards the PE for 1/350 scale, but backing off at 1/700.  I'll probably stick to that line in the sand for now.  I actually enjoyed the PE outfitting on my last 1/350 build, but part of that was due to the "wow" feeling you get the first time you carve off the molded-on ladders and rails and see the difference.  After a while I can see where it might get tedious, but for me the tradeoff is time -- that's why it takes me so darn long to finish a project!
