Any of you familiar with the USS New Kent from WWII?

I just found out my dad was on it during one trip to the South Pacific in WWII and thought I would ask you ship experts.

I just found this link and my dad's log says he left San Diego for Kwajalein on January 20, 1945.....the same thing this link says. Wow! This is blowing me away.

Mike,

That is so cool that you have your dad's log book to refer to, history as recorded by a history maker.  The Wikipedia article says she was rammed by an escort, was your dad on board at the time?  I'm only familiar with this class of transports through a kit available from Revell, the USS Montrose/USS Randall, which is on my "someday to do" list.  I've always been more intrigued with the auxiliaries than the combatants.  As I'm sure your dad's log book confirms, they too have their story to tell!

That is so cool, and ... I sense a modeling opportunity!

Loose Cannon Productions just so happens to make a Haskell-class APA. I just so happen to have it, but it's in the "pending" pile. Looks like a great little kit: http://home.earthlink.net/~loosecannonproductions/Kit15.html

I am not sure if he was onboard when that incident happened.

I wish I knew more but he went to be with the Lord December 26, 2001.

That is pretty cool though to finally know what ship he was on when he sailed to Kwajalein.

He was on the USS New Kent during WWII, My wife's dad was on the USS Saint Paul heavy cruiser during Korea, and my older brother Tom was on the USS Oriskany during Vietnam.

Not another project for me? Does it ever end? Laugh [(-D]

I am not a ship modeler but I do think ships are pretty cool.

I remember walking the deck of the USS Carl Vinson at Alameda, CA during San Francisco's Fleet Week. That was very cool!

I notice that the Montrose/Randall, along with the Esso Glasgow T-2, have disappeared from the Revell Germany catalogue. These things are all over eBay, but they might be hard to find at the LHS soon.
