Which Yamato?
Posted by Scottie on Monday, March 31, 2008 11:32 AM
I was going to order the 1/700 Yamato full hull model and saw there are two makers of this model in this scale.  There is the Nichimo (NUI7001) and the Fujimi (FJM42139).  Unfortunately no vendor carries both so I cant ask the vendor which one is better.  I was wondering if anyone out there had any opinions or thoughts on which was considered the better one.  This will be my third ship to build in this scale.

All I can offer is the opinion that the Tamiya 1/700 Yamato is one of the best plastic ship kits I've ever seen.  And the Gold Medal Models set of photo-etched metal detail parts for it can turn it into a masterpiece.  But it's strictly a waterline kit.

Dear JTilley,

First, let me start with a complement and a thank-you.  I read these forums frequently, and I can't thank you enough for the wise, experienced, and thoughtful responses you share with us.  You are truly an amazing resource and we're lucky to have you here. Thanks!

As an aside to your reply, albeit a bit off-topic, any thoughts on best kit for this vessel in the 1/350 scale?

Cheers, Rick

Well Rick,

Since you changed the scale - I will too - lol.  I've built the 1/200 Nichimo Yamato and if you put a lot of hours and $$$ into it you can have a respectible representation of the ship.  I have some photos on my webiste of it.

I did build the 1/700 scale model  of the Yamato when Tamiya first came out with it.  I thought it was very good then and I know that the latest offering by them is retooled and updated.  The addition of a nice photo etch set has the possibility of a real show stopper.  This small scale can get pretty fiddly what with the small parts - that's one reason I like the larger scales - my eyesight isn't what it used to be.  I would recommend the Tamiya verson in 1/700 from my experience.

 Regards,

Paul

widepaul,

What's your website? I have the 1/200 sitting in my basement and need to get motivated.

RTimmer - Many thanks for your kind remarks.  I'm delighted if any of the stuff I've posted in this Forum is of use to somebody.

I'm afraid I have no experience whatever with 1/350 warship kits.  So far as I'm aware, though, the only 1/350 Yamato is the Tamiya one.  (Caveat:  I think at least one Chinese company has released a kit that is in fact a slightly cruder copy of the Tamiya version.)  It's more than 25 years old now; I think it's widely regarded as a basically sound kit that represented the state of the art when it was new, but doesn't any more.  (In some ways the 1/700 version is actually better detailed - and, being much newer, benefits from recent research.)  But the 1/350 Tamiya Yamato undoubtedly has the potential to be turned into a really spectacular model - especially with help from aftermarket parts.

If you are getting the full-hull Yamato in 1/700, I think you might be wiser to get the Fujimi, rather than the Nichimo.  Nichimo in the past has been a bit on the crude side, while Fujimi has consistently produced very accurate and 'to scale' models in this size.  Perhaps someone else might comment?
