Need some help with paints for USS San Diego
Posted by usmc1371 on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 4:40 PM

Hello all,

I'm a real novice when it comes to ship models.  I mostly build AFV's.  I'm getting ready to start a 1/700 USS San Diego.  I want to paint it in Measue 31a/24d.  I know I need Navy Blue, Haze Gray and Deck Blue according to the Warship Perspectives book.  What I don't know is what colors in the Model Master range do I need to represent this paint scheme.  Also, what's a good hull color?

Thanks,
Jesse

The only Model Master paints that will match up to your required colors will be in the acrylic line. #4241 is 5N navy blue, #4238 is 5H haze gray and #4243 is 20B deck blue. If you want to work with exactly matched enamels you will need to pick up the paints directly from White Ensign Models (service is lightning fast) or through a dealer in the US who carries them. As to hull color, do you mean below the waterline? WS

Ha, I didn't even know there was a "Marine Acrylic Colors" line from Model Master Acryl.  That shows I only do AFV's.  Is the Anti-Fouling Red correct for the hull below the waterline?

Thanks,

Jesse

There WAS a marine acrylic line. Testors/MM dropped that line a year or so ago Sad [:(], but hobby shops may still have them (mine does) and they are available on line.

And yes, anti-fouling red is the below the waterline color. If you don't want to spring for the WEM paint for that one, I use one of the Floquil railroad colors, Boxcar Red. Any brand of flat black will do you for the boot topping stripe, the narrow strip between the hull paint and the anti-fouling paint.

Yeah, I'm having problems finding the MM Marine Acryl line.  Besides, the Acryl line gives me headaches, must be something in the paint.

How about PollyScale paints?  Are they any good? I know there is a Haze Gray, Deck Blue, and Navy Blue.  I've never used these paints before though.

Close, yes.  Accurate, no.  To my eye the 5-H Haze Gray is too lavender.  Pollyscale's paints are good, some people prefer them to ModelMaster's acrylics
