Ushakov (former Kirov) -- decommissioned?

"Disposals/Reserve: The first two units of the class are in reserve: Admiral Ushakov (ex-Kirov) inactive but nominally in commission in the Northern Fleet since suffering a nuclear accident in 1990. She entered a shipyard for overhaul in 1999, but funds are lacking; it is very unlikely that she will return to service. Admiral Lazarev (ex-Frunze) has been inoperable in the Pacific Fleet since the early 1990's; the Navy is reportedly asking for donations to fund her repair, but she is unlikely to see further service."

Thanks ppvr -- there is other news about the ship as well -- it's going to cost $315 million dollars to repair the damage, and the Russians are not keen to do it. But then again, the ship is also too powerful and prestigious an asset to decommission. They go back and forth on this.

Me, I'd be sad to see her go, powerful and handsome adversary that she was throughout the 1980's.

The Federation of American Scientist website www.fas.org states that the Kirov will be overhauled and refurbished and equipped with the latest equipment and weapons.

I certainly hope the Ushakov makes it back in service. She is a beautiful ship and I hope to make use of the few pictures I have of her when and if a model comes out in a smaller scale. This class of ships has always been one of my favorite Soviet designs.

I agree, she is a beautiful ship and the last modern warship that can be called Battlecruiser, bacause of her size and power.
Like WWII japanese warships the soviet ships also have a distinct design.
I hope she comes back too.
Big ship are rare and they will disapear some day, execpt aircraft-carrier of course.
