Kimikawa Maru tender finished
Posted by mfsob on Thursday, April 3, 2008 9:56 PM

I finally got to the "stick a fork in it it's done" stage with my IJN Kimikawa Maru build, and forced myself to quit before I broke something else off. This little display of the 1/700 Skywave kit depicts her right after the Japanese occupation of Kiska in June 1942, unloading seaplanes and construction materials. Thanks to all on here for the information and advice, as always!

Various photo etch is from Gold Medal Models, White Ensign Models and Toms Modelworks. Extra airplanes and boats from Skywaves E-12 accessory set. The diahatsu barge is my first-ever scratchbuilt ship. All cargo rigging, radio aerials and ropes are stretched sprue. You cannot build cargo boom rigging at this scale without a Waldron Sub-Miniature punch and die set (or at least I can't). The water is acrylic gloss gel medium over acrylic paint in various blue and green shades. Wakes are drybrushed acrylic titanium white.

Outstanding job! Those overboard discharges are a nice touch, and the rigging looks great.

Ever think about putting it in front of a suitably bleak Aleutian backdrop?

Fred

ps, I know what you mean about sticking a fork in it. i'm fast running out of steam on my Victory ship.

MFSOB,

I think I just heard the oven timer go off...this is not only done but WELL DONE!  I love what you got going on here, the offloading operations, towing the seaplane, the launches going to and fro.   Nice job!
