Anchor of the "Mighty O"
Posted by MikeV on Monday, April 7, 2008 4:26 PM

I rode my motorcycle to Jack London Square in Oakland, CA today (About 20 miles) and took some pictures of the USS Oriskany anchor on display there to show my brother Tom.

Tom was on the Oriskany during Vietnam and has a lot of memories of it and is kind of sad that it was sunk as an artificial reef recently. Anyhow here is the anchor, all 30,000 pounds of it. Big Smile [:D]

The anchors on modern carriers weigh 60,000 lbs and each chain link is 360 lbs. Wow! Shock [:O]

The "Mighty O"?? We used to call her the "Toasty O" after all the fires she had.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

I'm building Oriskany from the Trumpy Essex. To be more accurate about 80% of the hull is Trumpy and the rest is scratchbuilt....just about everything from the hangar up and all of the bow....

Neat to see the anchor, and I'm glad they saved it from her before she was sunk. I'd love to dive her someday.
