I'm working on a 1/350 Ranger that will be posted in about two weeks. For those of you that can't wait go to www.modelshipwrights.com and look at the carrier forum.

A scratchbuilt Ranger! I checked out your post at Modelshipwrights, very nice job on the sponsons. I'll be keeping close tabs on this build, I was stationed on her from 1972 -1975. Be sure to tell that guy on the other forum that there weren't ever any 40mm guns on CVA-61.

So I'm curious. Were did you find the plans? or are you eyeballing it? I found some drawings of the Midway at globalsecurity.org of all places. Just barely enough to get started, but not enough to build. someday when I'm retired................

You can find plans of the USS Ranger CV-61, circa 1978 at the Floating Drydock. They may have plans for the Midway.

Just a little FYI: In 1974, on the Ranger, during a little inport period at Subic Bay, PI, our big ship's bell (the one mounted for fog signals on the foward starboard side catwalk) was stolen during the night by parties unknown. It was brass and weighed over six hundred pounds. We steamed for five months without it. If we had been pulled over we would have gotten a ticket!

Sound's like an inside job. 600lb bell isn't something you can easliy stick in your duffle bag. Did they check everybody's locker! Who was on watch! Maybe it ended up on the Indy, weren't they stationed out of Subic Bay?

Super job! What type of paper/card stock are you using and how will you protect the paper from humidity and such?

Hi Zellars, well all the card  stock and folders are acid free. I got them here in the S.F arts and craft store. I did a lot scratchbuild cards and seem to be o.k no problems what so ever. My friend FDR still looks ok.4 coats of paint and heated by a hairdryer  seem to take care of the humidity along with Furture floor wax.

No, it wasn't an inside job. We found out later that some local shipyard workers did the deed. Apparently they removed the bell from its mounting and lowered it over the side (60 feet) to an awaitng banca boat (an outrigger canoe!) and paddled off. It must have been a big one to hold that bell.

How many guys on board the Ranger? Nobody saw anything? What the H*** were the marines doing! Laugh [(-D]

You must have put in for some repairs and no one bothered to keep an eye on things? I assume the bell was retrieved?

This was in Subic Bay! Olongapo City! The Philippine Islands! The Port Royal of the Pacific!   Nobody gave a (insert expletive here) about the stupid bell. It was just off of the flight deck and you know the airedales wouldn't even know that there was a bell there anyway. The Marines were only onboard to guard the nukes and to be lackeys for the CO. Everyone was on liberty and it gets really dark in the tropics at night. Plus, it weighed over 600 pounds, that takes a lot effort to manhandle something with that much deadweight. It never occurred to anyone that anyone would want to steal it. Too much work involved. The crew of Ranger was overworked anyway.  We got a new one when we got back to the States, I was one of the lucky ones who got to install it.

Kool story. When I was station in Kanhoe, I had to take the C.O to Pearl. They had a meeting with the NavPac and the BLT commander. The meeting was on board the Ranger. A very clean ship impress me a lot. I guess thats the reason making her. Any how she has a island.       http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_1037.jpg                                    http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_1038.jpg                                     http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_1039.jpg                                    http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_1040.jpg                                   http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_1041.jpg                                     http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_1042.jpg                                    http://is129.photobucket.com/albums/p226/raider-hall/100_1043.jpg

When I was stationed aboard Ranger the only guns we had were the aft 5"ers. I remember once when we had a dependents cruise the guns were fired prior to being given the order, resulting in a very P.O.d CO and a very sorry weapons department. It scared the tar out of some of the kids.
