PE question
Posted by Wildcat on Saturday, May 24, 2008 10:16 PM

I'm working on my 1/350 USS Missoui and I have a PE question.

I have the Eduard PE set for it and wondered what is the best way to set the Stainless Steel railings on the upsweap curve of the forward main deck?

I saw Gold Medal Models has a pre-curved set of railings for it but I'd hate to have to order another PE set.

Thanks!!

First of all, figure the total amount of sheer in the deck for the length of the railing run.   That is how much rise you will need to impart.   Hold the PE flat on the table.  Hold it tightly in place with your left forefinger (if you are right handed).  Put your right forefinger against your left and slightly push away from you.   Slide the left finger down to where the right finger is, and repeat.    Continue down the length of the railing.   Trial fit and repeat as necessary.   Your intent is to get sufficient sweep over the whole length.   You may need to pull backwards a bit in some places to get a good fit.

Will that work on Stainless Steel PE?

I read somewhere that it will work on brass but wasn't sure about SS.

The Eduard PE I believe is plated brass.  I saw a demonstration of what Ed talked about except the person just used a couple of pairs of pliers and worked his way down the railing.  What I like about Ed's approach is that it stays flat working on a flat surface.

Strongly suggest using Elmers white glue to attach the railing.  It works so much better than using CA.  In short shape the railing the way you want it.  Run the length of the railing hrough a puddle of white glue and position it on the model.  Now using a small paint brush with water mop up any excess glue.  As the glue dries it shrinks and does a fine job of holding the rail in place.  If you want you can use thin CA and accelerator to add strength.  I also recommend you paint your railings before you put them on.
