ARII U.S.S. Midway Hull Errors
Posted by gberthiaume on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 10:15 AM

Hi,

I am currently building a detailed and acurate ARII 1/800 scale U.S.S. Midway and have noticed several errors in the kits hull after doing some research.

The main error found is where I am having problems to properly correct it. The kits stern is not properly molded. I suspect from photos of the vessel in dry dock that the two inner propeller shafts go directly into the hull through an almost vertical wall and not like the exterior shafts where the shafts gradually enter the hull throught the side walls underneath (I hope that was clear).

What I have been looking for is a clear photo or blue print of the hull of the vessel from either the U.S.S. Midway, U.S.S. FDR or the U.S.S. Coral Sea since the three ships are of the same class. Perhaps a photo of the U.S.S. Midway kit from another company other then ARII would be of great help.

The only plastic injection molded Midway class carriers beyond the ARII model were the three Revell kits of the ships in their axial deck configurations. The hull was decidedly inaccurate below the waterline as those details were classified at the time the models were released late 1950's). As for photos, I recommend that you access the different veterans groups websites for those ships by doing a Google search. There might either be photos that could help you or you might meet someone who can help.  Good luck!

Don't know if this helps but here is a drawing I found. I'd like to, at some point, build a 60's version..............
