The island has been disassembled and is in the process of being moved to the Museum of the American GI in College Station, TX (i.e. Aggieland)

As of their March 2008 newsletter update it was still in pieces.

Check the contact list on the museum homepage

The museum in RioHondo closed in 2005 with the transportable exhibits being distributed among other museums in the state.

Google Texas Air Museum for links to the facility in SanAntonio with points of contact.

RioHondo is suburban Brownsville,  home of the most active ship breakers on the Gulf coast.   Probably not much left.

They kept the island? Wow, that was a good thing to do. I worked as an apprentice on the Iwo Jima after I got out of the Navy and went to work at the Norfolk Navy Yard. That was in 1981. I don't have any pictures though, sorry.

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Hi,

they have the "Texas Air museum" in Rio Hondo in Texas.

and in the museum they have the original and complete island of the amphibious ship and helicopter carrier "USS Iwo Jima".

I´m building this ship and would be happy, if someone will make a walk around and shot every detail of the island for me.

I hope that there is someone in this forum, who could help me.

 Best regards

 Andreas
