Photos taken 52 years ago on July 26, after the nightime foggy collision between the two ships. All the surviving passengers had already been removed to the French liner Ile de France, which transported them to New York. The Swedish liner is pictured anchored to the sea floor after the impact involuntarily released her anchor. On the stern of the Swedish liner, a Coast Guard helicopter is hovering above the stricken vessel.
Less than two hours after this photograph was taken, the doomed Andria Doria heeled over on her starboard side and sank bow first, at 10:06 am, several miles south of Nantucket Island, MA. The reserve naval training ship, USS Kyne, was on a cruise to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada from the Brooklyn Navy Yard, NY. We arrived too late to render any assistance and only could be spectators to a marine tragedy. I took these photos from the stern of the Kyne, which is shown on a souvenir postcard.
