1/350 1960's Sumner class FRAM
Posted by Misterkenro on Sunday, June 15, 2008 10:30 PM

I found that Iron Shipwright has a 1/350 resin kit of the USS Laffey DD724. I am planning a build of the USS Collett DD730 in 1960's FRAM setup but before I order the kit I thought I would ask you pros if there are other options for a FRAM Sumner on the market?

Anyone have an opinion on the Iron Shipwright USS Laffey? Just curious as I never have worked with resin before.

Thanks in advance,

Ken

JAG makes a very nice 1:700 scale resin & brass Sumner-class with FRAM II.  JAG kits are waterline and typically only provide class-specific PE details.  Generic items such as railings are left to the modeler to supply if he chooses.  (It is a cost-to-produce issue).

Either of these will get you where you want to be.

Another option might be to take a styrene Sumner kit and FRAM it yourself.   A long time ago (BR - before resin)  I took an Albatross Gearing, a supply of Evergreen, a spares box, and some plans and FRAMed the Joe Kennedy.

There is nothing mysterious about resin.  It does not cement with typical solvent glues.  You must use CA or epoxy.  Otherwise it can be cut with your typical modeling tools, can be filled & putties with your favorite material, and can be painted with your favorite paint.

And depending on the type of resin, it can be drilled with impunity, but check with the specific manufacturer first. Some resins can be quite brittle and spall off or shatter, others are much softer and more like styrene plastic.

Appreciate the responses, I placed the order with ISW today. Really wanted the 1/350 scale full hull. It is going to be a present for my fathers 75th birthday. The Collett was the last ship he served on before he retired in 1970.

Thanks for the pic of the USS Frank E. Evans very nice detail for a 1/700.

I'll post pics of the Collett as she progresses.

Seeing the picture of the Evans, I was reminded that she was cut in half, in an accident with the "Melbourne", in 1969. As I recall, the whole forward half sank, and if memory serves me correctly, over seventy of her crew were lost. May peace, and the care of our Lord be with them.

I didnt know that. The Collett had a run with the AMMEN in 1960, 11 of AMMEN's crew died. The AMMEN was scrapped shortly after, however the Collett received the front hull from the SEAMEN a Gearing class that was never completed.
