Cheap RC gearboxes/transmissions
Posted by searat12 on Sunday, June 22, 2008 2:13 PM
I have been looking around for a source for cheap two, three and four shaft gearboxes for use in converting a few 1/350 warships to RC, but have not been able to find anything much under $150!  Now when you buy one of the MinHobby Yamato's, for instance, it comes with a four-shaft gearbox for simple 'motorized' running, yet something similar from an oufit like Mack, costs an absolute bomb!  Does anyone know of a cheaper and reliable source for such things?  I'd hate to have to buy a kit just to cannibalize it for the running gear!

Maybe if you went to a place that does office machine repair, you might be able to salvage belts gears and shafts from copiers and the like. Also a soda distributor may have broken bill changers which are a wonderful source of 12 volt motors, shafts and gears. Its what I usd to power a turntable on my model RR layout.

I'm not looking to cobble together some piece of junk out of 'odds 'n sods!'  It just seems to me that somebody out there should be producing these things in some quantity, if for no other reason than to sell to the big model manufacturers, and undoubtedly for a lot less than $150 a pop!

Gearboxes for a 1:350 scale ship - have you looked at the Dumas Adapt-a-drive components?  The MACK gearboxes are really designed for larger models - over 3 feet long; like Scale Shipyards 1:48 scale ATF or their 1:96 scale BB's.
