rokket,

Do you think the subs at Pearl Harbor durring the time of the attack would still have had there numbers showing or were things considered hot enought then that they would have been painted out?

Yes, the "red lead" was an undercoat, the bottom was black. Measure 9 the whole boat was black, Measure 32 the top dark gray.

The prewar boats were a light gray above waterline, and had huge white numbers with black drop shadows, but when war broke out and the boats were painmted black, they just painted obver everything. Presumabley the numbers would be slightly visible closeup.

The shafts would be painted too, but they would have wear near any bearings.

The props were painted I think.

Actually it would be black below the waterline.  Red was only on prewar boats.

Sorry, My last post was in error. The shafts would be painted the same color as the bottom, which was usually some shade of red. The prop's and their end caps would be unpainted bronze.

According to Snyder and Short database - Growler was painted in MS9 in 1942 and 1943 - the 1944 entry is blank - most other subs in 1944 wore MS9 (overall black) only a few were painted MS32.

The shafts would be a dull brass, and the props would be bronze.

USS GATO color questions.

Are the prop shafts and props black as in the Revell instructions or are they other colors? I saw a few photos on line and they appear to be a metalic color. I'm getting close to finishing mine and want the right colors. I'm doing the USS Growler if that helps. Also what paint scheme did she have when she was lost in 1944? The pictuers I've seen show her in what looks like all black. Thank you.
Cluster bombing from B-52s is very, very accurate. The bombs always hit the ground.
