Minesweeper models?
Posted by Gordon D. King on Sunday, July 27, 2008 4:23 PM
One of my wife wife's brothers served on YMS-6 an auxiliary minesweeper during World War II. Does anyone know of a model kit of this boat. He was on it when it was commissioned and left it in China at the end of the war. Newell, her brother was one of eight members of the family who served in WWII. She had five brothers, one sister-in-law and two cousins in the service then. All made it home safely. I would really like to find a kit of this ship, or one which could be easily adapted.

Iron Shipwright makes a 1:350 scale resin & brass model of the YMS-1 class motor minesweeper

Ed: Thank you very much for the link. They have one in stock and I have ordered it. Newell will be very surprised once I build it and give it to him as a gift.

I just started working on the model YMS. Construction details are very vague and there is no diagrams to let you know the identities of the brass or resin parts. Has anyone built this model who could help me. I did follow the link from Ed and printed the review and the one about the model which was built. Neither was much help in identifying the parts. For example I don't find any part which looks like the main mast.

In the box was there a piece of brass tube or maybe it is taped to the lid? My resin model of the Vestal has a piece of brass tube taped to the inside of the box lid. You could scratch your own from a wood dowel, brass or aluminum tube though if you can't find it. Another way is to build the rest of the kit and the part left over is the mast <G>

Mr. King,

My Dad served on YMS-6 during WW-II.  I would like very much to see how your model turned out and am interested in building one myself.  I have the entire official ships plans for this boat, but have been unable to find a YMS model with two stacks like YMS-6.  All the models I have seen only have one stack.  I would also lbe interested in any information you can share about this boat and it's crew.  The Minesweeper association has been unable to locate any of the former crewmembers.

Thanks,

dave

I want to give a big thank you to Jon at Iron Shipwrights. Some of the resin parts for the YMS kit were broken and the piece of brass for the mast was missing I sent Jon an e-mail and he sent off new parts immediately. This is great customer service. I have completed the model and presented it to my brother-in-law. He was extremely pleased.
