What 1/72 Space related kits are there?

I'm a bit of a space (i.e. not sci-fi) fan and I'm big on 1/72 stuff--think you could all throw in your two cents and fill me in on what (real) space kits are available in this scale?

There is a 1/72 shuttle, not sure what else. Some of the experimental research aircraft (X-1, X-15, various lifting bodies) are available in 1/72.

Space is all over the place 1/12, 1/32, 1/48, 1/72, 1/96, 1/144, and 1/200 as well as some box scales. 1/200 seems to offer the most variety of subjects in one scale.

I'm not a big space builder either so maybe, someone who is will know of more out there.

Starship Modeler's site has a corner dedicated to non-fiction spacecraft: http://www.starshipmodeler.com/real/rsintro.htm You will find some information here.

Real Space Models has some nice 1/72nd-scale resin models:

You can also search for "real space" models in virtually any scale here:

http://www.ninfinger.org/~sven/models/models.html

And Erik te Groen offers some 1/72nd-scale Delta II models that are stunning, but not all modelers have the chops to tackle card models. It requires a bit more skill and creativity than just slapping some plastic together:

Airfix had a Lunar Module in 1/72 years ago.  I'm sure some are still out there.

Tamiya did an Apollo CSM

and LEM,

as separate kits, as well as a combined kit, in 1/70, which is probably close enough for government work. They were released in about 1970, and one version of the combined kit was motorised - It had a swivel mount, which you attached tothe ceiling at one end, and to the model at the other. When you switched the engine - which turned a propellor protruding from the Service Module's main engine - it turned a propellor, which made the thing orbit your bedroom in ever increasing circles!

Other than the Airfix 1/72 LEM (last re-released in, IIRC, 1991), and the Revell and Monogram Space Shuttles, that's about it in injection-moulded plastic in 1/72 (though all other US and Soviet manned spacecraft are available in 1/72 in resin/ etch, and white metal). Even in 1/48, most manned spacecraft apart from Apollo and the Shuttle are pretty small, and the International Space Station is unfeasably large in scales larger than 1/144.

Cheers,

Chris.

While it's true that there are a lot styrene models by the big companies in a lot of scales for real space, the (unofficial) main scale sizes that the GK guys are doing are 1:24 for most unmanned satellites, and probes, 1:72 for the manned vehicles, and 1:144 for the rocket bodies.  Thats not to say there's not other kits in other scales but if your a scale slave these are the biggies.    But then again if you don't find a kit in a scale you want a lot of space modelers just build their own!

The best place to learn about real space modeling has to be at the Y! Space Modelers Group - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/space-modelers/

It should be re-issued for the 40th Anniversary next year. I should point out that the kit is of the 'Boilerplate mock up and will require significant work to produce a replica of a specific lander. That said, a lot of improvement can be made by just covering the relevant parts in aluminium foil

That would be gold-coloured foil, not aluminium. You might start to be on the lookout for suitable stuff - it needs to be thin, gold, and crinkly. since many foil wrappers today ae plastic-based, they're not crinkly any more. The gold foil that Bourneville chocolate used to come in was just the thing, but it seems that you can't get it any more.

Cheers,

Chris.

In the absence of the real thing, why not spray the Aluminium foil; with Tamiya clear yellow

Because you'll find that it pools when you apply it to alu foil, and takes forever to dry. It also rubs off easily. A better approach might be to get some gold Bare Metal Foil, and apply that to aluminium kitchen foil. You can then cut out pieces slightly larger than the panels you need to cover, crumple them slightly, test-fit and trim to size, and glue them in place using white glue (so that if you accidentally get glue n the foil surfaces, you can wipe it off with a damp cotton bud).

Cheers,

Chris.
