There are two SCA (shuttle carrier aircraft) in use by NASA. NASA-905 and NASA-911. IIRC 905 was ex American Airlines and 911 ex JAL

Here's a link I keep on my comp. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/news/FactSheets/FS-013-DFRC.html .

Hope this helps.

All the best.

Greg

In a past life I was an Archivist/Records Manager for Manned Space Flight at JSC. My work included processing records at Ellington field. The older 747 maintenance records indicated that it was a former JAL 747 purchased in the 1970's. Hope that helps.

There used to be a British company making a 1/72 scale 747-400 that was pretty impressive (and about $150).  At our local IPMS show a few years back someone had made the jet/shuttle combo in that scale, with a runway base.

My description of it? BIG!!!  It barely fit in the back of his minivan. Glorious in detail, though.

I built that kit back when I was just a pup many moons ago.

Yeah, I wish I had one in my stash too.

You got a telegram from headquarters today. Headquarters--what is it? Well, it's a big building where generals meet, but that's not important right now. [ img] f_armorsecretm_ac7eb73[/ img]

Pretty big project. I live about 5 minutes from Nasa. Here air some pics from Ellington Field.

The tail is modified and the size is ... well big. The picture of my son next to the model should give you an idea of how large it is in that scale. Hope these help.

If 1/100th interests you there is the Tamiya shuttle and Entex made a 747 in that scale.  The 747 maybe hard to find though.

FYI - Revell made a shuttle / 747 kit a few years back - I've got it in my stash.

I take it you are planning on scratch building the 747? NASA has a ton of FREE photographs available.

I'm looking for any info, books or websites dealing specifically with the 747 used to carry the Shuttles. Engine type, block number, etc. I figured you knowledgable folks would be able to direct me. Eventually the research will go into a 1/72 scale model.

PS I purchased the Osprey title and was highly disappointed.
