Mike,

Go to http://www.savethelut.com/ and look around.  Many good drawings and links.

Mikeman - you "just won't have the time or patience to build" the paper 1:144 LUT but now you want to SCRATCH BUILD one?   Please 'splain!

Chris,

I guess my translation for "no time or patience"  was "you gotta be sh_ _ _ _ ng me!" when I opened the paper LUT kit. Heh heh.

Guys,

it's a matter of "how much detail do you want".  Some kits are very basic (Card stock with photos printed on them depicting plumbing, etc.) and some guys go all out with the detail.  One gent on our paper website is doing a LUT in 1/48th scale and is rolling each pipe, wire conduit, rail, etc.  Granted, it's taking him months and it's still not done, but when it is finished, it will be museum quality - We're talking Smithsonian quality here.

I built one about 35 years ago for the 144 Saturn V.  I scaled NASA photos of the tower to the size of the Saturn V with the tower.  It took a while but I got the scale and made all the components from scratch.  Back then, my components consisted of wood for the entire platform with many coats of shellac before painting to make it look like steel and various type of thread, wire, and solder to make many of the cables, conduits, etc.  Took me about a half year including lighting which was unusually difficult because of all the work lights inside the LUT areas (such as the elevator) as well as the ones normally visible (also, this was in the days of grain of wheat bulbs).  It looked great and when the lights were low or off, it lit up the Saturn V beautifully.  Unfortunately, when we were moving things to paint this room, someone did not see the tower under its covering and stepped on it.  When I took a look , I just did not have it in me to rebuild and so, no photos are available.  It was one of the great builds I did because it just totally set off the Saturn V when lit.  So, my measurements came from the available photos from NASA.
