X-15A-2 canpoy interior pics?
Posted by Gigatron on Sunday, February 21, 2010 10:10 PM

Hey gang,

I'm just about to start on a Special Hobby 1/32 X-15A-2.  I have the Hypersonic book and have been pouring over the pics on primeportal, but I can't find decent pictures of the canopy interior.  I've found plenty of pictures of the cockpit, but none of them ever look up into the canopy.

If anyone could point me to pictures that might help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Fred

I'd say it's a pretty good guess that all the canopy interiors were much the same.

Here's a link to a photo of Michael J. Adams with 66670  (the X-15-A2 was 66672)

You can pull out some detail with Photoshop:

Hope this helps.

Fred,

I was mistaken.  X-15A-2 was 56-6671.  The only picture I've found is B&W, however it looks to be pretty much the same.

56-6672 looks like the other two, and there doesn't seem to be much reason why the three craft would vary significantly.

Both these photos came from NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center Website:

Thanks again, Bruce.

I wonder if that first pic (of the second group) is of #2 before the crash and rebuild?  I don't see a tail number and from everything I've seen, A-2 has oval windows.

Are there any definitive pictures of A-2 that show the windows from both sides?  I'm wondering if A-2 has the eyelids like 1 did.

Fred,

Yes, probably before the crash. I don't think there's a date on the picture.

Here's a shot of X-15 #2 attached to the B-52.  Right hand window is the oval.

Here's a left-side shot in flight.  It appears there's a cover over the left window.

The DFRC Website also has this:

...and this...

...and this shot, taken in 1965.  No. 2 crashed in 1962.

Here's another shot of 56-6671, this time with an oval window on the left, taken in 1965.

Check this page at the USAF Museum, where X-15A-2 now lives.

I'm not expert on the X-15, but I'm pretty good with Google.

Bruce

Thanks again, Bruce Cool

I'm just going to go with the most definitive picture of the windows and leave off the eyelid.  Though, I don't know why, in the pic with the shielding (pre-paint) it dooes look like there is one.  But since I can't say 100% that it is there, I'll leave it off.

You're welcome, Fred.

Please post pictures of the model when you finish it.

Fred the NASA site has a collection collection of X-15 photos.

nasa.gov.centers/dryden/multimedia

If this link doesn't work type Dryden Flight Research Museum in your search engine. It will give you the link to hundreds of photos each listed by the specific airplane. It is where I got the photos I used when I built my X-15.

Swaney's models also has an article on the 1/48 scale X-15 Matt Swan built.

Thanks for that link, Gordon Cool

Between the links that you and Bruce posted and the pictures in the Hypersonic book, I think I can come up with one heck of an X-15.
