Models of NASA space science missions
Posted by Dr_Paul on Friday, March 26, 2010 8:53 AM

Hello everyone -- I am looking for some decent quality, small models of select NASA science spacecraft. Specifically, I'm looking for models of spacecraft from the following past and current NASA missions:

Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)

Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)

STEREO

Solar Dynamics Observatory

Dawn

Aqua

Terra

Landsat

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Doctor Hardersen,

most models seem to be of manned program vehicles or launch vehicles. as illustrated by this list of space exploration related models created over the years:

Unfortunately, it may be necessary to join the ranks of the Fine Scale Model scratch builders by duplicating the more familiar NASA paper moidels.

I am very surprised NASA doesn't offer pre-built models on their website.

Perhaps the subjects are too esoteric?

Thanks. I had already found the paper models, but I need decent 3D models of spacecraft for a K-12 educational exhibit that is being created to highlight NASA research in North Dakota. Apparently, the actual NASA missions do make a small number of high-fidelity models, but they are also expensive and few in number. As there are > 100 NASA science missions in design, development and operation these days, I think this is something that should have a broader appeal. I hope i can find something......

Doctor,

Would your academic credentials allow contact with the engineering teams ?

Perhaps NASA might consider offering 3D model dwgs to supplement the paper designs?

Someone in your university as well as NASA should be familiar with 3D printing such as this:

and the kits:

Your university would certainly have staff capable of assembling and using such a device.

NASA would need to modify some of their 3d CAD files for download, but it is possible.

Also try Nick Proach in Canada.  He has a good selection of unmanned vehicles and can create those he does not have.

Check out the kits from theses guys. They are laser cut card and are exquisite. Several of these maybe just the thing to scratch build some of the others on your list:
