Trying to remember an old Apollo kit.
Posted by jimbot58 on Monday, April 26, 2010 3:04 AM

I had a kit when I was a kid, that consisted of the Apollo section only. There was the Command mod, the lunar mod, the service mod, and the adapter section that attached to the Saturn booster and housed the LEM. It also included the escape rocket that attached to the command module. All the modules could be seperated as well. The command module had an operating hatch and when  you removed the escape booster, there was a small cone covering the docking station, and another ring could be removed to reveal the packed recovery chutes. The service module has a hinged panel that could be opened to display the fuel cells and O2 tanks. An antenna at the back folded out when it was separated from the adapter. The nozzle of the motor could be removed and pulling of the cover there revealed some of the plumbing beneath. The LEM had folding legs and the two sections of that craft could be seperated as well. The adapter section had four panels that would open to give access to the LEM. Two square bases were included, one a Lunar base that has craters, and indentations for the four legs of the LEM.  I believe there was also a 'blast' area from the exhaust of the landing craft. The other base held the adaptor section and the entire craft when assembled, and I think there were some clouds represented on it. I also forgot that the LEM and the command mod could be locked together with a small twist.

I don't know what scale they were as I was about 10 at the time but only wonder if anybody knows who made this kit. I am not seeking one but ask as a sort of trip down memory lane kind of thing.

Thanks

The kit was made by Revell and was in 1:48 scale.  You can still find the kit on eBay and I believe there was a reissue within the last year or so.  This was a great kit during the Apollo program.  You always saw it in use by Wally Shirra and Walter Cronkite on CBS when they were explaining how all the parts worked together.  The Apollo was a Block 1 model but I had updated mine to a Block 2.  At the time, money was very limited so I became creative using surgical tape that was carefully cut and painted to update the model.  Other modifications were made with household items that created an enhanced docking tunnel...   The lunar module was greatly enhanced through the use of gold chocolate wrappers.  A great kit with a ton of memories.  I actually still have it on display.  Great memories!

That appears to be the one. Saw one on Ebay for the low price of only $178! I must have really liked that kit to remember so much about it after er......a number of years! Here I am in my second childhood regretting tossing out the toys of the first one.

Thanks for the information!

It has not been reissued in that last batch of "Buzz Aldrin" kits. Revell German issued it about 10 years ago, and it also was issued under the Revell History Makers line in the 80s. I keep trying to get one on ebay a few years back but there was one buyer who seemed to keep hoarding them all then selling them at the $100+ prices. No thanksNo I keep hoping to find on on ebay or for Relell do a reissue to kick the teeth out of that fool's prices. But sadly not yet.... when I was a kid and Apollo was in it's heyday I remember my friend having one... my folks would not buy that one for me... only the 1/96 Lunar Module and Command/Service Module kit that was far cheaper and smaller.

I saved up my meager allowance, Birthday money and collected pop bottles to buy my kits! I actually bought these things and the paints and glues at something called a "dime store"!

Yes I do remember those. TG&Y was the name of the local "dime store" I remember buying  the old AMT USS Enterprise from Star Trek there.

Woolworth's 5+10 was my "hobby shop" for years. I'd drool over the box art, but thanks to impatient hands and glossy paints, they never looked nearly as good.  The kits were $2 and Testor's were 15c. They even hid the glue because kids were sniffing it. Now they spend $300 on online video games and smoke meth with their skank-of-the-day.  Looking back can be tough.

Back when I was young it seems every kid was building models and almost every store had them.   I used to buy models from the local drugstore.   And yes, I remember the little Testors paint bottles at 15 cents.

Wow.

I bought this Apollo kit at Skaggs (now Albertsons). All I have remaining is the CM.

My main hobby shop was Kmart. They had both sides of two isles with model "stuff".

Cars and supplies on one isle. Planes, ships, monsters, etc on the other isle.

There was a great hobby shop on the other side of town. I was able to visit it 3-4 x a year for about 20 minutes when my mom would shop "Piggly Wiggly" ( grocery store) for their periodic meat sale.

Hello

Saw your conversation here about the old Apollo kit. If your still looking to find one on Ebay, a suggestion, if you haven't already tried this....Try searching Apollo Models or searching with different combinations of words like model kits...plastic model kits...space model kits..etc  sometimes you'll pull up an obscure auction that isn't being watched much...you can also go into "Saved Searches" and put Apollo on a search list and I think you can get email notices when it finds stuff for you.

It is great remembering and on occation, finding these old kits. I still have the Apollo command module from my hometown Hobby shop, still sealed..Monogram I think..

We also had a Woolworths and a McClullens 5&10..Probably had kits..But Browns toy shop was the place for models and other " real cool stuff!"

good luck on E-bay

Dave

I just picked one up at the contest in Austin for $30.  I was very excited to find it.

I did too, also bought them from a local hardware as well.  Oh, the joy of walking to town and plopping down that allowance for the kit you just had to have and running back home as fast as your legs could carry you.  Mom would not allow glue on the kitchen table, but the picnic table outside was OK.  Paint, could hardly buy the kit, mine never saw paint until I was in the US Army, and only rarely for many years.  This thread brought back many great memeories.

Now those Testor's paints are $1+, but most modelers thesedays use much pricier stuff and airbrush on layers of colors based on color-corrected archival images. Other than paying $40++  for kits, to me the biggest changes now are photo-etched brass parts. The detail is  amazing, but you need to be tidy and patient. No more firecrackers and lighter fluid after building a model with these.

One of these just went for $91 on eBay.   I wish I could have grabbed it but couldn't justify spending the money at the moment as I have so many unbuilt kits around.

Yeah, this kit regularly fetches north of $200 it seems.   The version that also includes the 1/24 Gemini and the astronaut figure goes for close to 4 bills!    I was lucky to get my kit for $100 on a "buy it now"

I am so glad to see this coming out again! I had forgotten about it until I saw Tom Hanks using it to show his movie son how Apollo worked in Apollo 13. Oh boy, oh boy!
