Mars Rover

Hi all,

I've spent time the last few nights in a mostly fruitless search for a Mars Rover kit. Any ideas on which company might be the first to come out with one?

Anyway, kudos to you folks. I've seen some awesome looking models displayed here.

Haven't seen any kits yet but they have a die cast available at Code 3 collectables. I'd put in a hyperlink, but I ain't that smart.....yet.

My guess is most companies wanted to wait 'til they knew this latest one would work.

I haven't built the MER, but this guy's Delta rockets are fantastic, and I'm going to start on SIRTF, er, Spitzer, fairly soon.....

The other, the one from code3 looks like the one I found at www.spacetoys.com. I thought it was a pre-built replica instead of a kit. I'll check it further.

I'd suggest checking with some of the 54mm figure companies like Andrea -- they might just make something kooky like this. I'm surprised Glen at RealSpaceModels doesn't make one, or the little one from '97.

Why not try a scratchbuild project? There's tons of data available on what it looks like, and it's lots of fairly simple geometric surfaces. Seriously, it might be a fun first scratchbuild project.

I reviewed the one on www.spacetoys.com and it is the same model built by Code 3 collectibles. It is cheaper to buy it directly from www. code3.net as it is only $150. I can't wait for it to arrive.

i know it's a bit in left field, but LEGO makes a model of the Mars Rover...
and it's A LOT cheaper than $150 !
i was thinking about trying 2 scratchbuild 1 of these myself...
anyone know if there r good pix or plans on the 'net ?
it would b a fun project...
hope they get the real 1 working properly again !

There are currently no plans to produce any MER vehicles in kit form. The license is strictly enforced on this and I know for certain that Code 3 is the ONLY company currently able to produce any reproductions at this time.

I would not count on anything in the future either in regards to a kit.

Actually, there appears to be a 1/1 scale one not being used right now, as long as you are willing to travel a bit to pick it up. Big Smile [:D]

There is a good paper one available at http://www.lansbergen.net/ , click on MODELBOUW and scroll down to the rovers. He also has a model of the Delta 2 that took them there.
What I'm doing is taking those plans and putting them on sheet styrene. Then go to the NASA site - http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/images.html and use the "spacecraft" and "artwork" links onthe left hand side of the page.

yes, just did. Thanks for the link. Looks like some interesting Stereo Lithography. I heard the drawings and stats are currently classified, so the dimensions and details may be fudged a little, but the model looks good.
