Announcement shuttle launch tower detail sets
Posted by LVM_Studios on Monday, September 5, 2011 3:44 PM

Not sure if it is allowed to be posted, if so please remove and accept my apologies!

After 2 years of development LVM Studios announces the first 3 detail sets which are part of a complete series for detailing the in 1986 released Shuttle Launch Tower (4910/4911) by Revell.

According to many people an impossible job but we managed to super detail the model and still maintain a lot of the original kit features. The first detail kit LC39S1 (69 PE parts) will provide platforms, stairs and equipment on the tower (FSS), the second one will provide details for the FSS elevator shaft and –room (13 PE parts). The third kit (19 PE parts) will provide parts for detailing the hammer head crane. All detail sets come with an extensive assembly manual.

The kits will be released beginning of October 2011. Other sets in this series are already in development. Please visit our website http://www.LVM-Studios.com for more information.

ESP?  I've ALWAYS been a little sensitive to things that weren't exactly widely known, and this evening something popped into my mind out-of-the-blue. I wanted to learn if there were any model kits of the Launch/Umbilical Tower for the Apollo/Saturn V rockets. I "invested" in a couple of Saturn V's a couple years back, and a paper tower kit that needs some solid foamboard backing for rigidity. A simple idea that I always wondered if there was a better version of. So, I thought of my old stand-by for info, which is this forum.

I'm so glad to hear there is a kit of the later shuttle version of the tower. I had heard of it, but this post gives me hope that there is either another maker of the tower for my Saturn V to mount with, OR, this same company that has created the PE updates has a work-around addition for the existing kit to be re-made as the old work-of-art that was the original L/UT.

Nothing I can think of would be a finer dispay than the original full tower and rocket sitting as if ready to reach for the moon in my own home!

LUT like this:

It's a paper model and I hear it's a beetch to build.  But it's pretty cool.   The guy sells 'em on eBay but almost always has them available (in several different scales).    Search the "Space" forum.    There's a thread where someone built one in 1/144 scale.

Yes, that's the one I bought about 2 1/2 years ago when they were a little cheaper. I have to say, that it even LOOKS intimidating in the big heavy roll when it arrives. Opening it and viewing the CD-ROM gives you a little more idea of the TASK ahead, chore, may be a better word. All the corners need colorization with a good set of artists pens or felt tips so the colors aren't thrown off a little by the whitish folds. I have always been curious as to how much foamboard is required to complete one as well. Could plastic be much more expensive?...even an upgrade set of parts to convert the shuttle tower to the original LUT?

I still wish there was a plastic, full-scale (1/96) launch/umbilical tower. There's not a paper model IN THE WORLD that does justice to its subject, and I've built a few of spacecraft to have a partial idea, The colors are nice, the prices are attractive (FREE in some cases from NASA sites) but its not 3-d-ish enough, IMHO.......Since I've almost completed the first of the two I have, I'll probably be starting the paper L/UT this winter. I've ordered an Aioshima 1/96 Columbia/Eagle kit due to a review that stated this kit does justice to the actual vehicles. I know the parts in the Revell kits are rather, well.......I'm looking forward to the arrival of this kit this week.

Making a conversion kit for the apollo/saturn LUT would be to much work and the revell kit has scaling issues. Making a new kit would also be to expensive. Papermodels are nice but it is not the same as plastic and photo etch.
