Dragon 1/48 LM Eagle: color of struts?
Posted by rcboater on Sunday, November 13, 2011 9:07 AM

I just picked up the new Dragon 1/48 scale Apollo Lunar Module "Eagle" kit at the local shop.

It is the "First release" and includes pre-painted gold parts.

As I work on the kit, I've found a puzzle:

What color should the lower support praces for the "legs" be? The color and markings llustrations on the back of the box,and the cover artwork, both show them as a mix of black and silver.

But the pictures also show them as smooth surfaced, while the kit parts are covered with that "wrapped in foil" surface detail. The parts are also some of the ones that were painted gold at the factory.

I started to paint them black (just mindlessly following the instructions) but they don't  look right-- I suspect that the parts are silver and black underneath, but then wrapped in gold foil-- a detail the color and markings artist missed.

I've done some googling, but haven't found a build review or a decent reference yet.....

Similar--  but that image isn't in the kit-- it looks like it shows the kit build OOB, using Dragon's painting guide.   I'm just trying to figure out if the foil on the legs should really be paintned black or not...

Here's the cover art from the Dragon kit.  This art matches the painting info on the bottom of the kit box.  (The only place they provide any color/markings info.) :

Thanks for the link.  Those pics show the same thing as the Dragon instructions-- that the lower frames are silver and black,  when not wrapped in foil.

But the dragon kit shows those parts wrapped in foil, which leads me to think they should  be gold in color.   I'm beginning to think that perhaps Dragon just got it wrong-  that the parts should not be foil-wrapped.  (Sanding all that detail off will be a real PITA, too!)

The larger diameter section of the lower strut represents the thick black insulation applied there.   You can paint it flat black or apply tip foil that has been sprayed black.   The smaller diameter sections were covered with the silver colored insulation with the gold stripes.   The photo of the kit in the link above seems to have it mostly right.
