1/32 Apollo 8 help needed
Posted by stikpusher on Thursday, February 2, 2012 2:34 PM

I have the Monogram 1/32 Apollo Spacecraft kit, 1994 edition that I will be starting shortly.

I want to build it asApollo 8 and would like to know what, if any modifications need to be made to the kit particular to Apollo 8. Also what websites are out there for good photgraphic references. I was planing on detailing the instruments on my own as funding is very tight for me nowadays and the Real Space interior is not currently an option.

Crud!!! I just read an article this week about how to modify the Apollo CM and SM to look more like the real thing. I just cannot remember at the moment where I read it, magazine, book, or online!

I do remember it involved changing the position/shape of the windows and removing the little nubs where the LET attaches.

The SM required changing some of the panels and removing/adding rings on the engine bell.

 I've got a headache now!Tongue Tied

I went thru my FSM library last weekend and found an article from Feb 1996 that sounds like what you describe. But it is for the Revell 1/48 CSM and LM to upgrade to Apollo 13.

That is very possible. I have been reading some back issues of FSM.

One of the items is to take off the gold layer on the CM.  There was a comment on one of the forums (may have been on here) on what the person used to get off the gold color but not damage the chrome finish below it.  The CM was covered with chrome, reflective type tape when it was launched.  Monogram made the mistake of putting the gold glaze on it as a result of looking at the post-splash down photos.  The pictures after the splash down show a gold color to the CM but this is the result of re-entry heating.

Otherwise, you need to revise the colors inside the vehicle as far as the helmet, etc which are in the instructions.  There is a lot of information in the NASA site (www.nasa.gov) and a huge photo library.  Another resource is the Apollo Maniacs sitehttp://www2k.biglobe.ne.jp/~t_muto/apollo/cme.htm .  There is a link specifically to the Apollo 8 CSM.  One more site is   http://www.apollosaturn.com/frame-mod.htm   More photos of the Apollo 8 CSM.

Good luck with the kit...it is a great one.  I built it as a kid and recently bought another to build when I get the time...probably when I retire ; )

I found the link on how to remove the gold layer.  It was on CollectSpace and  they used alcohol.  Here is the link:   http://www.collectspace.com/ubb/Forum16/HTML/000381.html

Go to WWW.spaceinminiature.com  and order book # 6 "Apollo command and service module"

It's got details on all versions of the CM .

The whole series of books is good too .
