Okay, the black tiles are in heavy shadow, but you can just barely make out (using a photo editing program and cranking up brightness helps) tiles. Look in particular at the top line of black tiles between the white tiles and the nose cone. And, of course, one can clearly see the white tiles.

I am eager to build the Enterprise and the 747 carrier vehicle. I see there is a new kit of the combo coming out.
I was able to see that pair on the ramp long ago in the early 80s when it visited St. Louis. I have a number of photos of it. I'll dig them out and see if I have shots that show tiles well.
Maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong. But didn't Enterprise have ejection seats for the glide tests?
Excuse me.. Is that an Uzi?
Casper, Any updates?
I'm looking forward to seeing some more build photos.
Your shuttle is looking AWESOME! Very sweet
I just found that out, and came here to post it. You beat me! :)
Enterprise also had fiberglass wing leading edges instead of RCC and many other
differences.
The original plan was to retro fit Enterprise into an orbital shuttle but too much work was needed.
mach71 Sorry I'm a bit late, but the Enterprise did have tiles.

While I'm not building one right now, thanks for pointing that out. None of the pictures I had seen of Enterprise had the resolution for me to see that. I did some research and found that they were foam plastic instead of the ceramic used for the "real" shuttles, which makes sense as a balance between the density and surface texture needed for the test flights she was used for.
Here's a nice gallery of Enterprise pics which may be helpful. http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/18/3168479/nasa-space-shuttle-enterprise-photos#3570381
PS: In your first post you mentioned the chrome plated inner payload bay door panels. They are, in fact, metallic in colour as they radiate excess heat. This is one of the reasons why the payload bay doors are always opened while in orbit.
Well i've been going by the Tamiya paint instructions so it's possible they got it wrong but I'm doing what they say
Cheers

She's coming along nicely.
Not to detract from what you've done so far, but she's more consistent with Columbia than Enterprise in terms of the black heat shielding.
Enterprise does not have the wrap-around over the upper surface of the nose around the forward RCS nozzles and Columbia was the only one to have the black upper wing roots.
Sorry I'm a bit late, but the Enterprise did have tiles. I took these photos last year at the NASM at Dulles airport.
Compare them to Discovery taken in the spring.
Lots of fiddly masking today;
This took all morning after I put down some neutral grey on the wings last weekend.
No matter how carefully you mask, some stuff always manages to get through grrr.... a few touch ups to do but overall i like the look
Back to some more work on the Space Shuttle Enterprise. This must be the first time I've ever airbrushed so much pure gloss white. I'm actually pretty pleased with the result and think I've achieved a nice silky finish without any orange peeling.
Wheel bays and wings attached;
Boosters and main engines before painting;
Got some work done on the Enterprise this weekend.
Cockpit, a bit bare but not much can be seen through the front windshield.
Various items for the cargo bay;
Rear booster components,
Fuselage fits together quite nicely despite some initial concerns
Not sure about the Tamiya quality of this kit. Does anyone know if it's a re-boxing of someone elses kit by Tamiya or just a very old Tammy mold?
jmcquate Remember, the Enerprise was not built to fly in space so it has no heat tiles and the main engines are mock-ups

Ah of course, well pointed out. That will save me on decals or scribing.
Draw decal has tile sets for this kit. I enjoy the shuttle models emencely.show us as you build this model
:-)
Yeah it's a good kit but has some shortcomings. For one I discovered there is none of the heat tiles on the underneath of the ship. I'll have to use my scriber for that. Also the cockpit is very sparse but it'll be interesting to see how much is visible through the forward windshield.
I want this kit so bad. Looking forward to the build.
Ok, so I usually don't construct space vehicles and I normally don't build in 1/100th scale but I liked the idea of a Space Shuttle and even at 100th scale it's a big plane.
I think I tackled an old Revell job as a kid so I'm glad there's now this offering from Tamiya. Now some of the details are great, others not so great. I'm not so keen on the blue tinted windows but hopefully Future will help these look better. I'm also less impressed with the gloss chrome styrene for the inner shield doors of the cargo bay but all these things aside there is a choice for all Shuttle that served in the program. i had to go Enterprise, the first Shuttle flown.
