Apollo Spacecraft
Posted by Neb L. Weffah on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 9:28 PM
Hi. I live in Calgary and I was wondering if anyone has any info they want to share on building Monogram's 1/32 Apollo CSM kit. I'm superdetailing the interior by scratchbuilding items such as; couches using square brass stock, masking tape seatbelts, paper seat fabric; using reduced copies on my colour printer of control panels; scratchbuilding missing bulkheads; scratchbuilding the docking tunnel; re-doing all the piping and wiring. The 'creme de la creme' is my scratchbuilt hatch. It has over 100 pieces of various bits of stretched sprue, sheet stock and spare-box items. I've covered it's exterior with ultra-bright bare metal foil in strips to replicate the Kapton thermal shield. I'll use it on the rest of the CM as well, but I haven't got that far yet. More later....

Wow! Sounds like quite the project. Would you happen to have any in-progress photos online? I'd like to see the hatch!

Have you checked out RealSpace Models' hatch and interior sets? Might save a lot of work!

I'd like to see your progress, too. I have the same kit but it's been in it's box for many years. I've thought a few times about getting the RealSpace Models resin detail set for it.

I live in Calgary as well, I haven't started my lander yet but would love to see yoursand maybe "steal" some ideas, it sounds quite the task you have set before yourself, reply and maybe we can hook up, I've been to a couple of the shows in Calgary but I don't really know anyone else that models, it would be nice to have someone locally to swap hands on ideas with.

Your not going to leave it like that are you?

JChurch and Neb L. Weffah.
Get in touch with someone from the Rocky Mountain Model Club. I've met a couple of guys from that club and they seem like a good group of fellas. They won't let you down.

Revell 1/96th Scale Saturn V
Posted by spacenut on Tuesday, February 25, 2003 6:35 PM
Anyone else have the huge Revell Saturn V kit? I'm using two kits to build one display. I've been down to Houston twice in the past four years. Have tons of photos of the display vehicle in "Rocket Park". I'm thinking that such a set-up will make for a perfect diorama. Whoever thought of laying a Saturn V on it's side as a display model. The New Ware detail set and replacement decals for this kit are absolutely beyond description. Really great products.

Regards,

Randy

I have the kit from Revell-Germany. I bought Real Space's kit for replacing the CSM. I just came back from Florida where I took pictures at the Saturn V center to use as references.

I'll see what I may have here that could help you out. And I'd also be very interested in seeing the finished model, as my Dad worked on the Apollo program, as well as every manned space program since.

Saturn V are just too tall to deal with high winds and standing upright. The tallest
standing Rocket is the Saturn I in Huntsville at the Marshall center. I haven't been
to Houston but photos of the park show none to my knowlege taller. You get to see that lovely Saturn V in Houston and Huntsville due to the cancellation of their
moon missions Apollo's 18 & 19. The one in Florida is the 500F test article they
used to test facitities at Complex 39 in 1966. They're expensive "lawn ornaments"
not being used but they do make great 1:1 displays!
