1/72 Columbia decals
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, October 22, 2004 9:07 PM
I Have 1/72 scale Revell Shuttle. It was salvaged from several defective kits that were being thrown out many years ago. I have the original decals, but I fear they were not the best new and they have not improved with age. I was wanting to build the kit to honor the Columbia astronauts and I was wondering if anyone knew of any aftermarket decals. I'm already planning on using the aftermarket nozels from Realspace, but I don't seem to be able to locate any good decals.

Real Space has some shuttle decals. Meteor Productions has a very nice set that includes all old and new markings on one sheet. Also something to look at is the payload bay resin set from Real Space. I have it and it is fantastic! It is resin and photo etch brass and stainless steel.

Meteor Productions also has the tile painting masks and the tile decals. They look awsome. I saw a finished one with the tile decals and they are amazing!!!! I may have those images in digital. If you want, I could share them through email.

I was just at the Meteor site. That stuff is awsome! I've never looked at their stuff befor, but it is impressive... Sure, send me the digital I'd like to see them. I'd been wondering what to do about the tiles and been playing with some ideas but nothing I could do would come close to this stuff without a whole lot more effort.
As for the bay, I also have the fule tank and SRB's from the old Monogram kit. I was thinking about adapting it to the Revell kit. Now that I've seen the tile decals I think I may just build it with a full bay without the tank which would obscure much of the tile detail.
I've not built any real space equipment in years concentrating on mostly SF and cars. This is getting exciting. I was going to wait until after Christmas to start the project, but it may happen musch sooner.
Thanks for the info.

I was just looking at the Real Space site. I see they advertise the bay kit to fit the Monogram shuttle. Any major issues in adapting it to the Revell kit I might want to know about? I think I'm leaning towards building it as an "in flight" display.

It is not much of a challenge to get it in the Revell kit. That is the one I have. I like all the tiles of the Revell kit. The Monogram seems to be more toy-like. Real Space is supposed to come out with a 1/72 Hubble Telescope kit. But it has been on the drawing board for several years. Their resin engines are good.
