Heh. Don't hold your breath! I am just getting back into model building after a 10 year hiatus! I'm going to be doing a lot of practicing and taking my time before I tackle that kit!

Actually, upon reading the instructions that came with the decals, they mention to paint it dark grey to help give the decals the proper coloring. Perhaps the pics in the OP didn't as the person said they threw it together really quickly.. ?

Well, it took almost a month longer to get it than it should have (USPS/Canada Posts fault though! It was postmarked July 3) but I will agree, I think it is too grey for my liking as well. I noticed the link at the top is dead, but it looked pretty close to what the decals really are (going by memory).

ALTHOUGH, when I build the model I am going to paint the belly and "dark" tiled areas black in hope of darkening the decals a bit, but I am not sure how optomistic I should be.

I will use the decals for sure though as they are an incredibly detailed set. The color is just a titch to grey for my liking.

I ordered a 1/72 kit that I will use on my booster stack as soon as I feel up to it. I'll post when I receive them to give an idea of their "true" color.

In the paragraph it says the the model wasn't weathered, and that you can weather it pre- or post mission. So I think basically your getting the tiles and they expect you to give them a dark wash.

I think they are great and would rather do a wash job than paint each one tile by tile. First of all I wouldn't go thru all that trouble, and I don't think anyone could do it and remain in scale over the entire craft...

Ditto, looks rather p***-poor, if you ask me. I'll just have paint each tile, one by one...

I have to agree w/ you on that one. They are way too grey toned, the white tiles look good, but you're right also in saying there is too much "space" between the tiles.

Check this out:

Those are the 1/144 decals, and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed, because it makes the thing look a bit too greyish, I think. Disapprove [V]

I have a picture of the bottom of the shuttle showing a pattern that's a bit like that, with apparently lots of white between the tiles, but I think it's because it's a picture taken from close-up. On 'normal' pictures, the white between the tiles does not seem to be SO apparent.
