What about the 1/96 Revell Saturn V? That's about the best pair-up of two real space kits you can get!

The tamiya shuttle is very good. there are after market decals for the tiles and the markings. The payload bay is highly detailed. The size is nice between the 1/144 shuttles which aren't detailed enough and the huge 1/72 revell and Monogram kits. I think you will enjoy building it.

In his Guide for Scale Model Builders dedicated  to the Space Shuttle, Michael Mackowski says:

The kit has a combination of fine recessed and raised panel and pattern lines.  The surface tile pattern uses raised lines and only appears on the upper wing surfaces.  General shape and parts fit appears to be good,..., but it appears some putty may be needed around the wing roots and nose RCS area.  Tamiya has molded the forward RCS as a separate piece; this results n a cleaner, better looking nose.  The APS pods are also molded separately, and some of the small RCS thrusters seem to be absent from the aft clusters.  The main engines are very well done and are made to swivel.  The exterior lines to the engines are molded separately.  The landing gear have very fine detail that makes it look like they could actually work.  The cockpit interior consists of a flat instrument panel (with decals), 2 suited astronauts and two erly concept seats.  Windows are tinted in blue.

Payloads include a very well done Spacelab. ...  There is also a manipulator arm but it has a claw at the end instead of the standard end effecter.  The rest of the payload bay liner makes a good beginning for detailling the entire payload area.

As this is an old kit, the decals provide markings only for Enterprise (dj: this may have changed by now - maybe others can tell??) .  Being the only kit in 1/100, finding alternate markings will be difficult, yet overall it is probably one of the best detailled Orbiter kits made.

I went through Tower Hobbies. Only $34! The Tamiya price was enough to give you a nosebleed! I also had the kit in my hands 4 days after ordering.

Actually, you can buy it directly from Tamiya USA:

Millions of them on the shelves here in Japan. Seriously. I see them everywhere.
Not much use to you if you don't live in Japan, of course...but just so you know, there are plenty of them out there.

Sounds like Jeffkretz has you covered with the Tamiya USA link!

Happy Shuttling!

The Tamya shuttle is wonderful. However the SSME's aren't accurate to the current version. I am considering kitting an accurate version. I need to make these for my own, so might as well cast a few more, right? When I get my 1/144 shuttle and my 1/72 U boat done I'll be pressing ahead with this. I'm also creating artwork for tile decals for this kit as well.

The 1/100 Tamiya shuttle kit is the most accurate shuttle kit (plastic kit). The drawback is of course the scale, since no other space kit goes with it. It also does not have the boosters.

But for a nice, independent shuttle model (such as a landing diorame) it is great. (Yes, I have the model :-)

I have not built it but I have heard it is very good. It is the original configuration. The only bad thing is the oddball scale.

Come on guys. I'm waiting for an answer on this too. There has to be someone on this space site who has built this.

Is anyone familiar with this kit? The LHS has some and I was just wondering if it was any good.
