Apollo Lander and Bare Metal Foil
Posted by 6bucks on Tuesday, November 8, 2005 2:52 PM
I'm working on a lunar lander and want to duplicte the gold foil on it. I bought some gold Bare Metal foil to use but before I take the chance I'll ruin it (it's a bit pricey) can you crinkle it up to make it look like the gold foil on the spacecraft? Does anyone know of another product that I can use to duplicate this if it doesn't work?

I used gold foil from "Rollo" candy rolls.  This served two purposes:  It gave me foil of a close color to the original and it also made me fat.

Enjoy,

Mike

Man I shouldn't have read that with coffee in my mouth *wipes screen*

thanks for the tip though. I'll try it if this stuff doesn't work out.

Is it possible to pass said Rollos through one's nose?

After that post I think I've painfully proven it!

And he's absolutely right- Rollo is what I'm using on a lunar rover project [from EVA Models] it has the right thickness, it holds 3M or other wide range adhesives well- and I won't even try to top the "makes you fat" line!

Priceless!

Hershey's Almond Kisses will provide nifty squares of gold foil just a bit bigger that the sides of a 1/48 scale LM.  You can even buy that bare metal foil adhesive to apply to the foil or use contact cement. My 2 cents [2c]

Thanks Griz,

and I like Hershey's better than Rollo's too. :-)

Another place to locate gold foil is one of those 'party supply' stores. I use the foil confetti, large size, for CRT screens.

Just curious. What kit of the LM are you building?

FWIW I also use candy wrappers but I get them before the candy is put in. ;-) Saves my already bulging waistline. These wrappers can be found in most  candy supply places. There's one I use that also takes mail order -

I'm not part of the company or have any vested interest. It's just that they have a good product.

Oh, I almost forgot, if you want that gold foil look, don't by gold - Go get the orange. It sounds dumb but the orange foil matches the gold kaptan color better than the gold foil.

Yeah, I'd have to agree on the orange foil, I got a sheet of it with my Real Space detail set for my Gemini, and now I think I'm going to have to re-do my LM......it never ends!  Don't forget that the LM had silver foil on it also.

The LEM used several types of foils, two of them were gold in color, one was a "orange" gold and one a more "yellow" type of gold in addition a silver and black foil was also used. Also rember each LEM was different Apollo 11  was LM 5 and their are many good photos available on line.  The Monogram is the best to start with and is closest to the actual shape of the LEM.  I was able to google many good photos.  I used a mixture of the foil that came with the kit and Gold Metal foil which is good for the "yellow" gold. Candy wrappers are also good (great to empty) but the gold can wear off leaving silver behind.
