Does anyone know a replacement for Micro Sol
Posted by Yann Solo on Monday, March 13, 2006 1:49 PM

I'm currently building the atomic city mercury kit and I'm scared about installing the decals. There is so much uneven surfaces that I'm pretty sure I'll screw it up.  I looked for Micro Sol in my area but it seam to be hard to find here in Quebec (Canada).  I can have it online from Udisco but they want a minimum order of 10$.  I have nothing else to buy and I don't want to buy 5 bottles just to have that minimum you know!

If anyone knows a replacement solution for that Micro Sol product, I would appreciate the tip.

No matter where you go ....... there you are.

Testors makes two different decal setting solutions, might give them a try if they are available to you, use them myself because I used to have a hard time finding Micro Set and Sol in Phoenix in the days before PC's and mail order was not that great then either

I'm told that a mixture of 50% acetic acid (white vinegar?) and 50% distilled water will make a good substitute for MicroSet (the weaker of the two MicroScale setting solutions). Scott Alexander, whose Atomic City company released the kit and whose decals I designed, recommends that you brush on a puddle of setting solution over the area of shingles where you're placing a decal like UNITED STATES, slide the decal onto the puddle and position it as best you can with a brush or cotton swab, and then gently blow the decal down into the corrugations. He says the decal will soften and begin to snuggle down.

I use the Microscale solutions basically because the quality is pretty consistent, but you're certainly free to mix up your own.

Thanks a lot for the tip Rick, I'm a little more confident now.

By the way, your decals look awesome!

Yann,
I also use a decal softener made by Gunze Sangyo........it's called Mr. Mark Softer.  It works quite well - I use both Micro Sol and Mr. Mark Softer.

Cheers, LeeTree
