Merkin63:

The issue is the July 1989 issue and the article was SPLASHDOWN! a 1/32 scale diorama of the Apollo 11 recovery and printed on pages 50-53.

The "Righting Bags" - Two were painted white with small hexagonal masks the Humbrol DARK EARTH painted over. Third was painted Dark Earth masked with thin lines from top to bottom and painted White over the Dark Earth.

Cheers;

Gregory

merkin63;

If you have a Draftsman supply store near you or an office supplier look in the drafting section for a machinist drafting template for bolt heads. It will save you a lot of time and you can draw directly on the tape roll.

Cheers;

When I built my Apollo recoivery diorama I just painted white areas with a dark tan webbing. At athat scale the actual hexes are hard to discern. White shapes worked well.

You can find some nice details for the splashdown configuration in Matt Irvine's latest book.  I'll give you the name but I'm not ay home at the moment.  Something with Spacecraft in the title.  It's not the history told with models book.  I think it's called "Spacecraft Modelling".  It's fabulous and I highly recommend it to anyone building real space category.

It's called Scale Spacecraft Modelling (http://www.amazon.com/Scale-Spacecraft-Modelling-Mat-Irvine/dp/1861267746) and it's an exceptional book.

I met Mat last year at iHobby Expo in Chicago and we've discussed his book several times. As Mat put it, "Scale Space Modelling came about in 2005 when an editor at Crowood Books approached me, as they wanted to add a spacecraft modelling book to their new range of modelling books. SSM was compiled as a book that would cover all aspects of spacecraft modelling from commercial kits, (well those that are still made!), simple conversions, more complex conversions, detailing, decals, painting, weathering (which is where I could also touch on SF), dioramas, photography to a certain extent and, to end, a complete scratch-build."

Highly recommend!
