Can anyone advise me on the colors on the SS-6 "Sapwood" in its ICBM role? I know it turned out to be a turkey in this role and was barely in service before being withdrawn. But I inherited the Meteor resin kit in 1/144, and built most of it. I got the gray/green color that seemed to be the consensus of those sources I could find, but would like to hear from anyone else who has an FS match for this overall color of the booster and attached parts. The lower part of the boosters appear to be some sort of metal color I can't nail down as well.
I've also seen photos and film that show a light colored warhead fairing, or nose cone. Also, I've seen it from the rear, and the engines, including the small vernier engines, appear to be lined with red around their rims. Is this correct, or would these be some kind of FOD covers? The engines WERE open in the photos I saw, and only the rims of the bells appeared to be bright red.
I was careful not to use the parade versions of it I found in some sources because they bore no resemblace to the operational vehicle's colors. But the red nozzles and light nose cone would add some badly needed colour to the model. I got the microscopic New Ware stencils for it, and want to get it done and on a base some day soon. This is my first Soviet ICBM.
Thanks,
TOM
