Weathering White Rockets
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 13, 2003 5:34 PM
Hi Folks,

Any suggestions for giving a little depth to all-white models while still maintaining that un-launched look?. Just finished an Ariane V which looks rather plain in its off-grey and white finish. Look forward to your tips and tricks!

That's the thing of course, they are brand new... Maybe you could try something more subtle than weathering: Paint first in a very very light grey, then overspray with pure white. The overspray should (I say should!) rest on the raised areas (such as strap on boosters and the like). For larger areas, maybe the same paints but spraying the white away from divisions, panel lines, ..., towards the center of the panels. You should end up with very bright panels that are lightly 'shaded' towards the joints...

Just a idea... Never tried it...

I've tried it on the old Monogram Space Taxi kit to get the look of a well used piece of equipment. I was quite pleased with the results. My camera is on the blink tonight- I'll try posting a pic later in the week. Good luck with the project.-
