I purchased a digital navy card model of U.S.S. Arizonia and found out that I am out of my   league . Can anybody recommend a beginners book on card modeling for a 62 year old beginner? Thank you for your help. Hank  Support the troops   Garry owen

Hi Gary,

Go to http://forum.zealot.com/f7/  They have an excellent help/tutorial section as well as being one of the best paper modeling forums on the net.

Hi Garry,

Welcome to the wonderful world of card modeling. I build in plastic and paper.

A very good place for a beginner to find information on card modeling is from Ralph Currell Graphics. If you have a printer the very excellent models are free. He has all skill levels , all free. He also has links to other very good card modeling sites.  Also look at Fiddlersgreen.net they have lots of good information as well as free models. I just finished a model of the GEE Bee racing plane from the 1930's. It was free from Fiddlersgreen. They also now have a free X-15. Very nice.

One of the things I like about card models is the multitude of subjects offered. Everything from a jet fighter to a Violin. A very large number of them are free. even the high skill level ones with many parts.

I know the Digital Navy model you mentioned and at this time it is a tad above my skill level.

May I suggest holding that ship in reserve for now and working on some of these easier but very nice free models. Books are good to assist in technique but you really have to get your fingers in it .

I have been working paper for about a year now and my skill level has improved with each model. Some of them even look good.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

The areas mentioned  are:   www.currell graphics.com         www.Fiddlersgreen.net

Go to www.currell graphics . net. click on any of the models shown and you can print the instructions and model part sheets for free. If you don't have a printer you can buy the models for a very low cost.  You can also find very good information on model building on this site. The links listed are also very good sources of information.

Speaking of good information, Fiddlersgreen also has an information section with all the models they have for sale and for free. They make very interesting reading and may spark your interest in the construction of a model.  Like all modeling its a fun, educational , and relaxing activity. And also, like all modeling , start with easy subjects to develop your skills in modeling technique.

Model construction has been shown to stimulate brain function in a positive way as does reading and studying music.

Hank..."don't give up the ship!" per se and don't let a difficult subject like the Arizona discourage you.

Try some simple subjects. Look around on the internet, do a google search on card models. There are boatloads out there for free. Like others have posted look at Currell graphics, fiddlersgreen.net, delta7studios.com. Look at Yahoo Groups...there are a couple of groups on paper modeling.

I prefer to model with paper. It is cheaper and releives my stress. And some of my paper space craft look like very detailed palstic models.

Good luck, thanks for serving!

Doug
