Proton problem
Posted by Kugai on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 8:23 PM

Any tips on replacing the open joint ( with the ring of x-shaped supports ) part for a 1:288 Proton?  The kit had a straight part and instructions said to roll it up.  I guess the plastic became brittle with age and broke while I was trying to bend it to fit between stages.

Any tips on avoiding the same thing with my 1:144 vostok would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Same thing happened to mine.

I put it back in the back and haven't even looked at it for over a year.

I even used a blow dryer to heat up the plastic and it still broke.

Use hot (not boiling) water and build a jig slightly smaller in diameter than the part should be when cooled.  Warm the plastic and bend it around the jig.  Dunk the whole thing into cold water while still attached to the jig.  When cool it should spring out slightly and end up right where you need it.  The jig is critical or you run the risk of twisting the part while trying to bend it.
