Question about sanding parts
Posted by mstrasko08 on Saturday, May 31, 2008 11:56 AM

Hi,

I'm working on my first model (Revell NASA Space Shuttle) in 15 years and I want to make it look as realistic and professional as possible. In which case I've been sanding every rough and jagged edge I can find on every part (sometimes I'm a little too much of a perfectionist). The problem I'm running into is that I've only finished sanding about 1/3 of the parts, yet a month has passed so I don't feel I've accomplished much with the model.

So I'm trying to figure out what type of sanding method would be best or if anyone has any suggestions regarding what actually needs to be sanded versus what should be left alone.

Because another part of my concern is that with all the sanding I've been doing, I'm beginning to wonder if all the parts are going to fit together properly.

Anyway, I would be grateful for any suggestions and tips.

Thanks,

Michael C. Strasko

Michael, Its unlikely that you have to sand everything. You cut the parts off of the sprue then sand the edges and the molding lines from the edges left from the machine that makes the parts.

You should probably go by the directions and assemble in sequence without cutting all of the parts off or you will get lost and lose parts. Use a sanding stick and file (for heavier removal).

Before anything you wash all sprues in warm soapy water, rinse and dry, in order to remove oil residue from the manufacturing process, otherwise paint may not hold to the model.

Slow and steady wins the race. Even the best of us learn something new every week in this hobby.

Just to be sure try a trial assembly using masking tape to see how it all fits.
