First LM Attempt
Posted by Mike F6F on Monday, July 21, 2008 5:33 PM
Here's a few shots of my first Lunar Module attempt. The model is the Monogram 1/48 kit and I used basically the Apollo Image Gallery photos for reference. It is meant to represent LM 6 Intrepid and I used the mission patches, etc., for the display.

Yes, its a moon lander, but its also a flying machine, so I wanted it to be displayed, "in flight."

I'm preparing a second attempt using the SIMs book, and New Ware photo etch, etc. I hope to smooth out some of the rougher details this second time around.

Its the most challenging model I've tried since fully rigged ships, years ago.

Simply beautiful. I remember watching this mission when I was fifteen years old. Well done!

Looks like you did a nice job! I agree with you about the complexity of the model. I did one last year, as Apollo 15, and thought it would be a pretty quick little model ...... and I spent almost 200 hours on it, accurizing it, researching it and building it. (I also scratchbuilt the LRV)

This was my first model in over 30 years!

One book I've got, which is outstanding, is Virtual LM by Scott Sullivan. Yes, there are some inaccuracies, but 99.9% of it is amazing! The research this authour did was incredible! Just about everything you'd want to know about the construction of the LM.

How did you mount your model? Just a dowel, or brass tube?

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

Pete,

I mounted the model with a brass rod through the center of the engine bell. The case is one I found in a craft store intended for an autographed basketball. Plane Crazy had the Grumman patch. I used the Navy wings, since all 3 Apollo 12 flyers were Navy. I tried to find someplace that sold Navy astronaut wings, but didn't have any luck.
